FlexTC
Compact Semiconductor Thermal Control Unit
MD Thermal Control Units offer high efficiency and flexibility, supporting various package types and device sizes, whether socketed or soldered. Using advanced technology, they provide precise and consistent temperature control through direct contact with the thermal head’s tip.
The pneumatically driven thermal head ensures stable temperature regulation, excellent power handling, and precise control, making the units ideal for low-power positioning.
The Mechanical Devices FlexTC is a compact, low-power thermal control unit for precise semiconductor temperature testing. It provides direct-contact heating and cooling for IC characterization, validation, reliability testing, ATE, SLT, and laboratory applications.
The FlexTC operates across a temperature range of -50°C to +155°C, enabling cold, ambient, and elevated-temperature device testing.
The FlexTC provides cooling performance of -32°C at 20W Tc. Actual DUT temperature depends on the complete thermal load, including device power, socket and PCB heat loads, and ambient thermal resistance.
FlexTC is designed primarily for low-power semiconductor devices, including sensors, controllers, optical components, small ICs, and other socketed or soldered devices requiring precise temperature control.
FlexTC combines a compact footprint, 22 kg system weight, quiet operation, wide input-voltage support, and direct-contact temperature control. These characteristics make it well suited to engineering laboratories and benchtop semiconductor testing.
The FlexTC thermal head places a customized plunger in direct contact with the device under test. The system transfers heating or cooling directly to the DUT and regulates its temperature using real-time sensor feedback.
Direct-contact testing regulates device temperature by placing a controlled thermal plunger directly against the DUT package. This concentrates heating and cooling at the device without changing the temperature of an entire chamber.
An axial thermal head approaches the DUT along the actuator’s main axis. A right-angle head changes the approach direction and can be useful where vertical space or access around the test board is limited.
FlexTC supports axial and right-angle thermal heads, allowing the system to accommodate different sockets, circuit-board layouts, fixtures, and mechanical access requirements.
Yes. The FlexTC plunger can be customized for DUT dimensions, package surfaces, socket openings, and thermal requirements. Plunger sizes from approximately 2 mm to 45 mm are supported.
Yes. A pneumatic clip-on actuator provides controlled, repeatable contact pressure for DUTs installed in semiconductor test sockets.
Yes. FlexTC can test devices soldered directly to a PCB using a boom stand, toggle clamp, manual actuator, or customized fixture.
FlexTC provides temperature accuracy of ±0.2°C and temperature stability of 0.2°C, supporting repeatable characterization and reliability testing.
The system supports programmable temperature transition rates of up to 50°C per minute, helping reduce thermal cycling and device test time.
FlexTC supports:
- PT100 temperature sensors
- Type K thermocouples
Its programmable thermal-feedback loop enables stable temperature control matched to the device and test setup.
The pneumatic clip-on actuator provides an adjustable actuation force from 30 to 80 kgf, helping maintain reliable contact between the thermal plunger and DUT.
Available configurations include:
- Pneumatic clip-on actuator
- Manual actuator
- Toggle clamp
- Boom stand
- Customized fixtures
- Protective enclosures
Yes. FlexTC is a self-contained, liquid-free temperature forcing system that does not require an external liquid chiller for normal thermal operation.
For suitable low-power device applications, FlexTC can provide a compact direct-contact alternative to thermal streams, environmental chambers, external chillers, and LN2-based test systems.
